Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Tom Hardy, the Forger in Inception, has been cast in the upcoming Batman movie. To be honest, it sounds like they are clutching at straws a little bit, the source indicating that Christopher Nolan likes to work with the same actors, and that Inception was such a smooth shoot that he's keen to link up again. If this is indeed the case, I'd rather it was Joseph Gordon Levitt being cast, but after his charismatic turn in Inception, Hardy would certainly not be a bad alternative.
Assuming this is true, then what role would he be up for? Everyone seems convinced that The Riddler will be the next villain in Nolan's Batman saga, given his love of playing tricks on the audience and the his all round intelligence. But for me, there are several villains I think could be utilised instead. Hush would be a great nemesis, as anyone who has read Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee's graphic novel masterpiece will attest to. Black Mask would also be a good alternative, and would certainly fit in with the Gotham underworld Nolan has established.
On the female side, I think Talia Al Ghul would be a superb way of bringing the story full circle after Ra's apparent demise in Batman Begins. And then of course, Catwoman is heavily rumoured.
As I say, all we can do is speculate at this point as Christopher Nolan is one of the few director's in Hollywood who can keep his scripts, stories and secrets close to his chest, knowing just how much to release to whet the public's appetite.
Who do you think should be in the next Batman movie? Feel free to leave comments below. Until next time...........
It’s marginally better than The Sun’s (British newspaper) rumour (although they reported it as fact) that Eddie Murphy will play The Riddler, which at the time had me falling out of my chair.
ReplyDeleteRiddler as the main villain seems like the safest bet, considering many of the other villains have supernatural powers or unfeasible technology that wouldn’t fit in Nolan’s grounded universe.
That's why I'd love to see someone like Hush turn up, or Talia Al Ghul. They have long standing feuds with Bruce Wayne / Batman, and can both easily fit into Nolan's real world sensibilities.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, the Riddler seems most obvious to me, just as long as they ground him and don't make him an over the top character like in Schumacher's Neon nightmare movies :)
Tom Hardy would be a lot better than Joseph Gordon-Levitt would ever be in a Nolan Batman movie, much as I thought the film was dung, Hardy's perfomance in Bronson would lead you to believe he could play any one of a number of Batman villains.
ReplyDeleteI just don't see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an in any way intimidating villian, he'll always be the soppy streak of piss in (500) Days Of Summer in my eyes.
Yeah but until The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was just the soppy guy from A Knights Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You, or the gay cowboy from Brokeback Mountain.
ReplyDeleteI think Gordon-Levitt could step into the shoes of The Riddler really easily. Just check out the likes of Brick or The Lookout for other performances by him.
And (500) Days of Summer was a great movie. Alongside Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it's about the only original rom-com of the last 10 years.
I knew you would cite Ledger as soon as I hit post lol
ReplyDeleteHave seen him in Brick also but I just can't picture him as a decent villain in anything.
(500) Days Of Summer was indeed a good movie but you can't deny there were times when you felt like screming at the guy to stop being so wet and man up.
